My name is Avery Taylor. I’m 26 years old, female, born and raised in Newport Beach, California and have been painting for 4 years. After college, I moved to Seattle in 2018 where I found an overwhelming sense of joy in painting. My interest sparked from being bored of the internet and societal norms, overcoming mental obstacles, an urge to discover my life purpose and an outlet for expressing my personality and emotions. I’ve always been creative, but never dived into using that side of my brain more seriously until I bought my first canvas. It was an artistic breakthrough.
I moved back home to California and continued to grow as a self-taught artist, expanding my work from portraits and abstract expressionism to building contemporary frames and more linear pieces. I work mostly with just my hands and without paint brushes. My different series include “no brushes”, “scraping”, and “capturing essences.” The last one is my favorite and consists of having friends and family send me their favorite photographs or captured memories where I recreate the image in my own style, while highlighting the mannerisms and overall personalities of the characters within the portrait. To finalize the piece, I attach the original picture sent to me on the back of the canvas for reference and to create a reversible piece of art. My method of painting includes listening to a variety of music in my parent’s garage and correlating the rhythms of what I hear with my hand motions on blank canvases. I like to keep pieces simple, rich in energy, and personal. As I do my life.
I use basic acrylics and experiment with scissors to bring out a more rustic and European style of art. Water is also an important aspect to my layering of color techniques. Painting is my therapy and passion as it exemplifies my sense of belonging and way in which my brain works. Its been a long journey creating these pieces and I hope the hard work put into each one shows. Thank you and Enjoy!
