ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Luong Van Ty
Traditional's allure with memories of Asian ancestry dating back to his childhood, he has only one goal as a dedicated painter. In his pieces, he combines the appeal of traditional Asian painting with the use of hypnotic abstract hues. In the year 1932, Luong Van Ty was born in Saigon, Vietnam. He was the son of a Chinese father and a Vietnamese mother and was born into a lower-middle-class family. He grew up in a rough neighborhood. He was twelve years old when his father died. Because his mother was illiterate, he could only attend elementary school. He was a carpenter's apprentice at the time. He was able to gather enough money when he was sixteen to start taking painting courses, largely private lessons and learning by working alongside other painters. Ty joined the army when he was 21 years old and served for 11 years. His talent was rapidly recognized, and the military granted him permission to paint and even supported him in organizing more than 10 exhibitions. He got multiple accolades and sold many paintings during his tenure in Vietnam.
Ty left Vietnam and immigrated to the United States in 1975. His first job was as a portrait sketch artist at Disneyland in California. He had to put his painting aside and work at various jobs to rebuild his life and provide for his wife and six children. He established the first Vietnamese local television station in Southern California, as well as a grocery store and an herbal medicine store.
The National Council of Art chose his masterpiece oil painting for the First International Art Exhibition in Saigon in 1962. Between 1961 and 1965, Ty organized several gallery exhibitions in Vietnam. In December 2005, he hosted a gallery exhibition in Orange County, displaying over a hundred pieces of his oil and acrylic art works. Ty Van Luong's masterpieces are a gift to the human senses; when viewers stand and gaze at his works of art, their visual, emotional, and spiritual senses are awakened. Mr. Luong has been painting in oil for many years and has a thorough understanding of the medium. He uses colors, glazes, and brushstrokes to create harmony and beauty.
