ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Roya Mahdavi Hassas
Roya was born in Iran and moved to Southern California at the age of 20. Making art has always been an important part of her life. She moved to California to study fine arts, but as a young female immigrant, she pursued a full-time career in engineering to secure her future. While working fulltime as an engineer and raising two kids, she continued to paint and sculpt. She is primarily self-taught and developed her own voice through soul searching, self-reflection, and self-discovery. She is interested in revealing buried emotions, complex feelings, and forgotten dreams.
Her figurative sculptures are made in water-based clay finished with layers of acrylic paint. She also expresses her inner thoughts and emotions through her abstract paintings that could not be captured through representational art. Using shapes, colors, texture, and lines, she communicates her feelings and accumulated subconscious memories.
