ABOUT THE ARTIST:
CS Goss
Mission Viejo based visual artist CS Goss began sculpting in the early 1970’s. He studied art at CSU Fresno. His mother, who was also an artist, influenced him at an early age and introduced him to the world of art. Throughout his life he supported his art and family as a carpenter. He started two-dimensional pieces in the early 1990’s but was not interested in the traditional ways to paint so he incorporated his carpenter skills into his artwork by painting various pieces of material using power tools and brayers to paint with. Then, he would assemble various pieces somewhat like a puzzle to complete the final piece which is then covered with resin. He calls himself an Artpenter. His two-dimensional works are on board or canvas using a combination of polymers (epoxy), inks, pencil, acrylic, and oil paints.
A theme he finds most interesting is using famous art of the past and updating it to reflect the current time in which we live. This may prompt the viewer to question whether our humanity has evolved or devolved. Daisaku Ikeda, his mentor in life, has taught him that developing a positive and optimistic life condition despite the difficulties he has faced will manifest in his art. The combination of a positive and optimistic life condition with his technical approach is what truly resonates with people. It is also what has become the fount of creativity for CSGoss, the Artpenter.
