ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Christopher Pecharka

Pecharka is best known for his four public art commissions in Dana Point, California:

  1. “The Top Men”, bronze sculpture – a historical depiction of sailors at sea for The Ocean Institute located at the ship’s dock.

  2. “The Veteran’s Memorial”, bronze sculpture - an imposing eagle on top of a shield located at The Strand.

  3. “Historical Mural” - Nature Interpretive Center located at the Headlands, commissioned by the City of Dana Point.

  4. “Doris Walker Tribute”, bronze sculpture - a memorial to the late local historian Doris Walker which depicts an open book of local interests that Ms. Walker wrote about in her books.

Christopher Pecharka began drawing and sculpting at the tender young age of six years old. He was raised the sixth of seven sons in the small Pennsylvania town of Canonsburg, which is located a few miles south of Pittsburgh. He earned his first private commission while still in high school. After graduating with a degree from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1982, he moved to Southern California to pursue opportunities as an artist. By working in many mediums and venues but always staying true to his “hands-on” ethic, Pecharka continually strives to develop his essential core skills as a traditional Fine Arts artist.

Pecharka paints from photographs from his (and friend’s and family’s) travels in the United States, Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. He considers public and private commissions and offers to his art patrons’ paintings of their travel memories. He sculpts using oil-based clay, which is then bronzed at a foundry.

Pecharka is not only an artist, but he is a writer as well. He has written essays, short stories, and a book of poetry. He is currently at work on a series of children’s novels which includes his own illustrations. He enjoys traveling, reading classic literature, and watching old movies. He lives in Laguna Niguel, California where he draws, paints, and sculpts in his studio.
