ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Inge Zelewitz
Inge Zelewitz is a South African Artist; graduated with a BA Honours Degree in Graphic Design in 2000.
As a Graphic Designer one of her major accomplishments was to be able to design the B.K.S Iyenger Yoga Convention’s corporate logo, and the cover of the special century celebration booklet, that took placed in France.
From 2003-2013, Inge had her own business in décor, art and fashion styling for shopping centres in and around Cape Town. She won the J&B Met conceptual styling competition three times, in conjunction with the major horse riding and fashion event.
Her conceptual ideas and small doodles started out in experimental drawings using the medium of ink and toothpicks. This technique introduced her to new, uncontrolled marks. It started out as small sketches, but evolved into images with metaphorical subjects. The ink sketches, became the launching pad to new creations of bold paintings and digital designs.
In her contemporary paintings; Inge works with a combination of mix media: acrylics, oils and charcoal to create modern art paintings. One of her monumental contemporary paintings is part of the “Home is where the Art is” exhibition currently on show at the Zeitz MOCCA Art Museum.
Her paintings are spontaneous layers of paint applied by using her ink roller/brushes. She would then apply more detailed images over the abstract background. The uncontrolled background layers of colour and textures becomes her guide for the more disciplined graphical images layered over. Inge balances the unconstrained marks with the more contrived lines to create a substantial new concept that is tangible to her viewers. She often write poems with her artworks to convey a message close to her heart.
Inge is part of a Life Model Drawing class with fellow professional artists and is also represented by The Start Gallery, Hermanus.
