Description:

Lilies of the Pond

I had never seen lily pads quite so colorful, cool and unique as those at Lotusland botanical garden in Santa Barbara, CA. After working on the image a bit, I thought the interesting shapes and colors demanded a more dramatic presentation. The result is more abstract, with a close view of the plants apart from their water habitat. Photo taken and created in 2023.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Bruce Orr

Based in Dallas, Bruce learned his creative and design perspective from a variety of sources over a long-period of time: college and professionally-taught photography classes; career in the advertising business; Board chair of the Dallas Contemporary art museum.

He archived his photography work over the years as a personal passion, creating artwork for he and his wife’s home, and creating coffee table photoArt books to gift family and friends, including artists. They encouraged his efforts as an artist.

Bruce’s work includes abstract, architecture, nature and people. At the heart is a keen desire to create surprising and unique art often unrecognizable from how it is commonly seen. It begins with a natural light photo of objects or nature in which the artist foresees creative opportunity. Exploratory work is done digitally before committing to the piece and its direction – whether that affects color, texture, light, opacity, etc.

He recently began showing the work. In his first show, fifteen of his pieces were identified as winners by the International Color Awards jury in their 16th annual competition.

Bruce has also partnered with the California Arts Council to co-found the California Music Project. Its mission is to support music education in public schools to develop more music educators in conjunction with San Jose State University.
