Virgen is a Garifuna artist - born in Honduras. She moved to New York City as a toddler. As a self taught artist, she began painting at the age of 13 when she entered foster care. Throughout her teenage years Virgen became intrigued with colors. Virgen wanted to express the light she envisioned with colors through her paintings even during some of her darkest times. After spending over two decades in New York City she recently moved to the West Coast to gain new inspiration and experiences. Virgen uses oil paint for all of her portraits. Her recent paintings are channeling her ancestors and the beauty of her culture and heritage. Virgen incorporates coconuts, leaves, plantains, bamboo and many native foliage and fruits of Honduras. While painting Virgen listens to the Garifuna music entitled - Punta for added inspiration.
