ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Carson’s work explores the ethos of surface, referencing the effects of time and space on urban surfaces in the interest of material phenomenology. Through the process of re-framing, re-sampling, and visually cropping, his paintings explore post-vandalism, graffiti art and visual histories embedded in the ethos of surface.
Carson James (b. 1986) is a native of Northern California and earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University Stanislaus, and Master of Fine arts degree from The University of Hawaii. While painting on canvas is his primary focus, he is also an active photographer which he finds to influence his process of framing the compositions. He is inspired by the dichotomy found on the surfaces that are overlooked such as derelict buildings, alleyways, rooftops, trains carts, and abandoned places, and sees his abstract approach as a re-framing process inspired by these surfaces.
