ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Sergio Mariscal

I was born and raised in Guadalajara Mexico, I discovered I had certain ability to draw since high school, it all started in math class, which I disliked, as soon as the math teacher would come into our classroom, I'd grab my notebook and I’d start drawing anyone around me, I never paid attention to the teacher's lessons. Needless to say I failed all my math tests and consequently flunked math during my high school years.

One day I saw the murals of Jose Clemente Orozco in my hometown and I immediately wanted to learn how to paint. My goal was to enroll in painting school, but I could not afford to pay for the tuition fees for the prestigious "Escuela de Artes Plasticas" in Guadalajara University, and had to put my dream of becoming a painter on the back burner.

A couple of years later, in 1972, I came to the US, at the time getting a job and learning english, became priority number one, I kept drawing whenever i had some time to myself, I didn't get to paint at all due to lack of space in my small apartment, It wasn't until 2011, that I started painting regularly. I'm pretty much self-taught, I did take a couple of painting classes, at UCLA extension, and CSUN. Nevertheless I have developed my painting skills, by practicing on a daily basis I considered myself a figuratixe expressionist artist. I like to fill my canvases with emphatic brushstrokes and bold colors. I want to make paintings that are visually pleasing, for the viewer and observer and for them to feel the emotional expression of my interior vision of the subject matter.

My work celebrates life, passion, happiness, vitality and energy.
