ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Barbara Romain

Barbara Romain earned a BFA degree from the Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts) and an MFA degree from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.  Her paintings are widely exhibited and she has  been the recipient of multiple-year Artist in Residence awards from the City of Los Angeles Department of cultural Affairs and the California Arts Council.  She was also chosen as a Teaching Artist Fellow for VSA Arts, an affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts  in Washington, D.C. 

In 1992 she co-founded Art Options, an arts education program which served hundreds of Los Angeles inner-city teenagers through 2007.   Currently she is a Professor at Columbia College Hollywood, School of Film & Television in Tarzana, CA.

Diagnosed with a rare form of retinitis pigmentosa in 1984, she is legally blind. 

A few of the venues where her paintings have been shown include the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the San Diego Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Commission Gallery, the Los Angeles Municipal Art  Gallery, gallery 825 in Los Angeles, the Holter Museum in Helena Mt, the Watts Towers Art Center Gallery, and the Terrace Gallery of the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.,         

In 2013, her work was featured in ART BLIND, an international exhibit of artists with Visual Impairment in Cologne, Germany.  In conjunction with the exhibit she conducted a workshop for art students and lectured on her work at a Symposium at the Kolm Media Academy. 

She has created several public and community outreach installations, including LAS ANGELINAS, a mural on the façade of the former Women’s building in downtown Los Angeles, ECHO LOVE, a permanent bus shelter mural in Echo Park, WHOSE MYTH ARE YOUSE WITH? An installation of large paintings  created with participation from community members at the Watts Towers Art Center Gallery, and INNER LIGHT, a series of large paintings for the Blind Services Agency’s offices in Chicago, featuring texts from agency clients.
