Encaustic on Wood
Original Art Work
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Elizabeth Brandstater
Born in Lebanon to Australian parents, I have lived most of my life in California. Landscapes, my experiences in nature, and inspirations from extensive travel are my primary starting points. With the visual, there is an associated word, phrase, or strong emotion that often becomes the title. My creative impulse moves me from my critical, analytical mind to an observing and feeling self. I am drawn to the mystery and emotions of non-objective painting. The work is a process of bringing something out of me that is as of yet unresolved, reaching resolution in the work. Not bound by realistic representation, I communicate using abstraction as my language, as words are inadequate to express certain experiences. Repeated application and removal of paint is part of the process. Once I’ve completed the work, it is up to the viewer to interpret, contemplate and respond; a silent connection has formed between us. Currently I live and work in northern San Diego.
