ARTIST STATEMENT:

Catalina Canessa

I was born and raised in Santiago de Chile in 1974.

I studied architecture, and in 2004 I went to live to the south of Chile. I worked in the restoration of 18 churches declaring patrimony of humanity, in Chiloé Island. Beautiful work also with chilote communities. Since the year 2009 l am living in Puerto Varas, a small city 200km far away to the north from Chiloé. Here I grew my family and live my life next to nature.

When I was studying I knew I was going to be an artist, and abstractions always had my attention because there is no limits, there is freedom in the form and in the use of materials.

My work is about bringing my experiences and emotions to the art. It is a personal exploration in a moving space, like an interior map that travels with me and needs to be written in colors, lines and movement. It is very intuitive process, dominated by life....almost never knowing the final direction.

I love layering the paintings, it is like the pages of a book, nobody knows how it is going to finish the story until the end, until the final layer gets to the final piece.

I use mainly acrylic paint, and all kind of colored pencils, graphite, carbon and pastels. Also love collage technique mixed with the paint. I work over strong papers, canvases, and wood panels.

I want people who see my work to find their own stories.

For me, painting is like being in the immensity of any big and extended natural landscape. I can go everywhere finding the path and explore in there until it is enough to feel the beauty.
