Biography
Susan Lawrence was born and raised in Santa Monica, CA. She studied art at the Instituto Allende, in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Her journeys have taken her all over the world to experience many people and cultures, documenting them in paintings and photos.
Landscapes and portraits are part of her artistic journey. Susan has spent time with the White Mountain Apache Tribe in Eastern Arizona over many years documenting the Coming of Age Ceremony of young Apache women. Her new ABSTRACT work focuses on MOVEMENTS IN NATURE and is inspired by time outdoors hiking, traveling and immersing herself in nature.
Artist Statement
Movements in Nature is a direct response to being outdoors in the sights, sounds and enveloping force of the natural world. Sunlight coming through trees and twinkling on the forest floor, water gently moving leaves on the top of a pond, wind …the sound of wind howling through the branches of an old tree, rain pelting down on an open meadow creating puddles. All of these experiences are combined for a visceral and emotional impact evoking memories of childhood adventures and moments in time.

The act of painting these images is done with the abandon and trust of a child and a fearlessness to dive into the unknown arms outstretched. The color and emotion become a dance on the canvas inspired by nature and vulnerability of the process itself.
