koralee is a singer and songwriter; music has always been integral to her expression but by no means is the extent of it. she is an internet meme and has appeared on television in 24 countries in seasons 1 and 2 of 'namaste yoga’. she has voiced telephone systems and appeared in commercials throughout north america. she is a published writer, and an emerging abstract expressionist painter, selling her works in both canada and the united states.
finding the right comparisons to other singer songwriters is a challenge. her fans cite vocal similarities to sarah mclachlan, joan armatrading, dolores o’riordan and alanis morisette - none of whom sound like each other. this speaks to the uniqueness of her sound; it is as if the listener hears exactly what they want to hear in her voice and her songs.
“‘(my) immediate reaction was that i was hearing solo voice of a quality i hadn’t heard before.’” — morris “mo” pleasure
koralee is a voracious autodidact. and her art is personal. after spearheading a relationship with atlanta-based producer, music director and multi-instrumentalist morris (‘mo’) pleasure (ray charles, earth, wind and fire, michael jackson, david foster, bette midler), they created the 2013 version of her song ‘sister’. koralee originally recorded the song with eliot sloan (blessid union of souls) in 2008 and released it on her self-titled ep in 2010. after working one on one with mo in atlanta, ga in october of 2012, 'sister' was released along with a video produced by koralee and los angeles based whim pictures in 2013. both the song and video artfully showcase the evocative quality of her vocals and strong presence, telling an intimate story - the death of her older sibling - with undeniable authenticity.
“‘koralee is not just an artist. she is an experience.’” — eliot sloan, blessid union of souls
koralee has spent the last three years collaborating with electrohouse and edm producers in los angeles and atlanta, resulting in the opportunity to work with luminaries including joris vincken, producer of the smash hit ‘heaven’ by dj sammy. this experimentation put her squarely on the path to her next project: a collaboration with techno dj and producer john norman. having established himself as one of the new and exciting voices in the techno world with his rhythm driven yet melodic production, he heads not only his own imprint, unt records, but has released tracks on kevin saunderson’s legendary kms records.
koralee’s most recent project, currently known as ep2015, was 101% crowdfunded and produced in los angeles by koralee and vocal producer jan linder-koda (kathy griffin, tim fagan, penn badgley) track producer matt moss (big bang theory, the voice, duck dynasty) and the legendary marty rifkin (bruce springsteen, glen campbell, jewel). it shipped to supporters throughout north america in january, 2016 and will be released digitally later in the year.
my art is born from emotional experience. i use the means of creation to process grief and loss, confusion and conflict. even if i can achieve no resolution in a given situation, i can bring myself closer to conclusion by expressing it into art. i don’t believe in the concept of ‘positive’ emotions being more valuable than ‘negative’ emotions. at the very least, negative emotions, when acknowledged, felt and expressed are powerful motivators that can open a process to bring about great change in the individual - and even the world around them.
although i see specific themes and images in each work, the viewer may see something very different. as much as i imbue a strong feeling into the pieces, i invite the viewer to project their own sensibility and emotionality onto the work.
