Georgia Ryan was born, raised and educated in Northern California. She attended Holy Names College in Oakland, CA, graduated from the University of California, San Francisco, with a BS degree in Dental Hygiene, and practiced that profession for 33 years in California and Arizona. She and her husband, Jim, owned and operated Ryan Signs and Graphics in Ft Mohave, AZ for 20 years. Throughout her life, she has been driven by the creative impulse, fascinated by the challenge of figuring out how "things" (art) are made, then making her own interpretations of them. She is largely self-taught with books, DVDs, the internet, and shamelessly picking the brains of artists she meets at shows or anywhere else. She has taken classes in drawing, glass bead making, jewelry making (lost wax casting), ceramics, photography, egg carving, kiln formed glass, and sculpture. Currently she is focused on three areas: kiln formed glass, sculptural (clay) pottery and tile, and chain maille jewelry, all very creatively satisfying.
I create because I am driven to do so. The challenge of mastering new techniques and creating with them is one of the necessary components of a (my) balanced life. Without it, I malfunction. And it's fun! My inspiration comes from just about anything - nature, conversations, a dream I had last night. I do not seek to persuade, judge, impose a philosophy, or make any particular statement with my work, other than to say "Look what I made - I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it!"
