By his early twenties Mr. Nickell had developed a highly original and evocative style of his own and began to exhibit his work with rapidly mounting success. As an early pioneer of digital media, he accumulated an impressive series of awards and honors consistently placing in the top ten of numerous briskly contested juried competitions, paving the way for digital art to become an accepted medium. Also at this time he worked as a graphic designer, creating many successful web sites and other collateral for top international corporations during the rise to prominence of the Internet Era.
After taking a hiatus for the birth of his first child, Mr. Nickell returned to fine art with renewed vigor inspired by the joyful abandon of his young daughter’s crayon drawings. His new approach returned him to a purer state of expression in both style and materials and he began forming a new body of work based on natural forms, and automatism. Characterized by intensive use of color, bold composition and winding, undulating forms, his new work evokes interpretation unique to each viewer.
I like to create a visual wonderland full of energy and mystery. Serendipity and the natural laws of physics with which liquid paint behaves are significant contributors to my creative process. It is as if I am a conductor, orchestrating forces of nature. The power of accident forces me out of my own limitations and prejudices, and causes me to have to reach further into myself for bigger and better solutions than I could have imagined from within my comfort zone. Sometimes acting out in frustration is the very thing that leads to a breakthrough. If it doesn’t go wrong, it isn’t right.
Another key factor in my artistic style is employing pareidolia as a formal element. The human mind relies on finding recognizable patterns everywhere the eye gazes. Denied a recognizable form, the imagination goes into overdrive and actually imposes some kind of image or meaning onto the painting that is not actually there. In my work, forms are suggested but left undefined to elicit an imaginative response from the viewer. This in some ways makes each viewer have a uniquely personal experience, and thus a contributor to the creative process.
